About link QR codes

A link QR code encodes a website URL as a scannable image. When someone scans it with their phone camera, the URL opens in their browser - no typing, no mistyped addresses. It's how you bridge print and digital: posters, packaging, business cards, menus, signage.

This tool generates a static QR code: the URL is baked into the QR pattern itself. It works forever, but you can't change where it points after printing. If your URL changes, you'll need a new QR.

For QRs you can update without reprinting (plus scan analytics and custom branding), use a free Hovercode account.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
A static QR encodes the URL directly - once printed, that's where it goes forever. A dynamic QR encodes a short redirect URL, so you can change the destination later without changing the QR. Dynamic QRs also enable scan analytics.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes - both have native QR scanning in the camera app. No separate scanner app needed.
How long can the URL be?
Technically up to ~2,900 characters, but the longer the URL the denser the QR pattern, and the harder it is to scan reliably from a distance. For long URLs (especially with lots of UTM parameters), use a dynamic QR - it stays scannable regardless of destination length.
Can I track how many people scanned my QR?
Not with the static QR - it points directly at your URL with no tracking layer. For scan analytics, use a dynamic QR (free with a Hovercode account) or tag your URL with UTM parameters so your analytics tool can attribute the visits.
Why isn't my QR scanning?
Usually one of: printed too small (aim for at least 2 cm / 0.8 in across), low contrast (keep dark on light), or the URL is so long the pattern got too dense. Test by scanning the printed copy with a phone before mass-printing.
