About app store smart links

An app store smart link is a single URL that detects what device the visitor is using and sends them to the right place: iPhone users go to the App Store, Android users go to Google Play, and everyone else goes to your fallback page (usually your marketing site).

That matters because in print - posters, flyers, packaging, business cards - you don't know which platform your audience is on. Without a smart link you'd need two QR codes (one for iOS, one for Android) and visitors would still get sent to the wrong store half the time. One smart QR fixes that.

The free tool here generates a static QR code: the link, the destinations, and the device-detection logic are all baked in at the moment of generation. It works forever, but you can't change those URLs after printing. If your app's store ID changes, or you launch on a new platform, you'll need to generate a new QR.

For QRs you can update without reprinting (plus scan analytics and custom branding), use a free Hovercode account.

Frequently asked questions

How does the smart link decide where to send users?
It checks the visitor's user-agent: iOS devices get the App Store URL, Android devices get the Play Store URL, anything else (desktop, smart TV, etc.) gets the fallback URL.
What if my app is only on one platform?
Leave the missing platform field empty. Visitors on that device will fall through to whichever URL you provided next (other store or fallback).
What's the fallback URL for?
Anyone who isn't on iOS or Android - desktop browsers, tablets in some configurations, older devices. Your marketing site or landing page is the usual choice so they can still learn about the app.
Can I track how many people scanned the QR?
Not with the free static QR - there's no tracking layer. Scan analytics come with the dynamic version, included in any free Hovercode account.
Can I add UTM parameters?
Yes - add UTM parameters to your store URLs before pasting them in. Use the free UTM builder if you need help putting them together.
